Gibitngil Island is an island paradise for peace-loving tourists who want to cherish the rich gift of Mother Nature. With its powdery white sand, clear turquoise waters, teeming with marine life and a peaceful community, it has become one of the wonders in the northern-most part of Cebu.
The island is part of the jurisdiction of Barangay Amparo of the town of Medellin, which is 116 kilometers away from the main city, Cebu City. It is situated about 0.54 nautical mile offshore from the main town and bordered by the mainland town of Medellin on the east, by the Visayan Sea on the north and on the south and west side is the Tañon Strait.
PROFILE OF THE ISLAND
Relatively flat to gently sloping terrain towards the interior where lush vegetation with endemic trees and hardwood. It is like a miniature rainforest.
The west coastline exhibits rocky cliffs as it is being wash by the waves of the Tañon Strait. Some cliffs rise up to 8 to 15 meters above the sea level.
The east coastline is covered with powdery-white sand and immaculate waters which clearly shows the abundance of marine denizens and thriving colorful coral reefs. The channel that lies in between the mainland and the island is a rich fishing ground, teeming with different species of fishes and other aquatic resources.
The waters of the Tañon Strait and the Visayan Sea are known to be the center of the world’s richest marine biodiversity. Its seas support the largest varieties of reef fishes and more than 450 species of corals, compared to only 60 species in entire Caribbean.
The abundance of corals in underwater gardens provide perfect backdrop for snorkel and scuba activities. It is also an idyllic place for extreme water activities and sports like jet-skiing and kayaking.
Other attractions are the vast mound of powdery white sand with a natural seawater lagoon and the cave formations along the fringes of the island waiting to be explored.
The island can be reached from the mainland 15 minutes using pump boats.
