The annual festival of the Meitei community of Manipur, Heikru Hidongba is celebrated in the month of September, precisely on the 11th day of the month of Langban of the Meitei lunar month. Celebrated at the moat of Bijoy Govinda, this festival of the northeastern state brings together local communities of Manipur in order to pray for peace and prosperity. Also famous as the religious boat race festival, the Hidongba Festival of Manipur marks the maturing of Heikru which is the seasonal fruit of the state. The major highlights of the festival are unique rituals that are performed to pay obeisance to God for a bountiful harvest, an exciting boat race and locals dressed up in traditional attires. Observed since the reign of Maharaja Irengbam during 984 AD, this festival in India is the biggest gathering of Imphal Valley.
