One of the most significant festivals in Uttarakhand, Nanda Devi Fair is held every year in memory of Goddesses Nanda and Sunanda during the month of September. It is a 5 to 7 days festival that is celebrated with great fervor primarily in Kumaon regions such as Almora, Nainital, Chamoli, Nauti, Bageshwar, Bhowali, Mussoorie, Ranikhet, Kichha etc. Uttarakhand Tourism makes good arrangements for tourists who visit the state to pay tribute to the Goddess Nanda Devi and to see the folk culture of the Kumaon region. Considered as a symbol of spiritual and material prosperity, the tradition of Nanda Devi Mela Uttarakhand began in the 16th century during the reign of Raja Kalyan Chand. Devotees from all over participate in a massive procession where Nanda Devi and her sister are carried in the palanquin (dola). The event is marked by singing folk songs, performing folk dances and displaying local handicrafts of the state in huge fairs.
