Aanayoottu is a popular festival in Kerala that falls in the Malayalam month of Karkkidakam that falls between the month of July to August. The major highlight of the Aanayoottu Festival is that on this auspicious day, the ancient ritual of elephant feeding is followed with great enthusiasm. More than 50 domesticated elephants are lined up in a row at the famous Vadakkumnathan Temple in Thrissur district of Kerala. The ritual of Mahaganapathi Homam is conducted much prior to the feeding ceremony and following the tradition, the youngest elephant among the herd is fed first.

Feeding the humble beasts s considered auspicious in Kerala as the locals firmly believe that feeding the elephants with the sumptuous meal is a way of pleasing Lord Ganesha and in return, they can seek his blessings.
