The phenomenon of buying and selling bottled or packaged water has a history spanning two centuries in western countries. England released Malvern in 1851, followed by Germany with Apollinaris, and the Italian brand San Pellegrino debuted around the same time. In India, however, the manufacturing and retailing of drinking water in bottles emerged only in the later part of the 20th century.
For most Indians in those times, buying water was unimaginable and may have also been considered sacrilegious. That scenario began changing after India’s independence in 1947. Once urbanization projects were initiated by the central government, the country witnessed large scale migration to cities with people looking for livelihood opportunities in both formal and informal sectors. This probably led people to adapt to a faster lifestyle as cities such as Mumbai, and, to some extent, Delhi offered cut-throat competition and those who were slow had to be content with what was left for them.
