Gaurikund is the cornerstone of the trek of 16kms to the sacred pilgrimage site of Lord Kedarnath. It is perched at an elevation of 1,982 metres above sea level. The place and its temple is dedicated to the goddess Parvati, wife of lord Shiva and also named after it.
Legend has it that it is the same place where goddess Parvati used to do penance and involving ascetics and yoga practices to win the heart of her husband, lord Shiva. It is said that lord Shiva accepted the marriage proposal of goddess Parvati here and married her in Trijuginarayan. This place is also related to the story of beheading Lord Ganesha and how he got the elephant’s head. It is said that once goddess Parvati was taking bath and told lord Ganesha to guard the door. Lord ganesha did the same as his mother told him and didn’t let lord shiva enter the kund. Lord shiva got furiously angry and he chopped the head of lord Ganesha. But after when goddess parvati insisted it was replaced by the head of an elephant. The lake is also called as ‘Parvati Sarovar’.
