Gangotri is a small town situated in Uttarkashi District in the state of Uttarakhand. The town is located 300 km from Defraud, 105 km from Uttarkashi, 250 km from Rishikesh and near to the Indo-Tibetan Border with at an elevation of 3049 meters above the sea level. It is surrounding by the Garhwal Hills. Gangotri is a religious destination and “Gangotri Temple” is one of the most famous Pilgrimage site. It is one of chardham and a popular religious centre of Hindus. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Ganga, home of Gangotri River and the river is known as Gangesh. Gangotri Temple has a great history and it is believed that Adi Shankracharay constructed this temple in 8th century and the present temple is built by the Gorkha Commander Amar Singh Thapa in 18th century. Accordeing to the legend, king Bhagirathi did a great Penance for impressed the Goddess Ganga so that ancestors could achieve salvation or “Moksha”. King Bhagirathi did Penance around 1000 years and able to impress the Goddess Ganga to come down on the earth for salvation of his ancestors.
